Integrated sustainable farming
Beru Island is a rural living environment setting located on the outer island situated in the Southern part of Kiribati. Rikian Arora Community is located at Kabaeka station, Nuka village, Beru Island consisting of 80 members. Beru Island consists of 2214 population which has been increased from the last five years census in 2015.
The project aims to build the capacity of members in an integrated sustainable farming program equipping them with necessary skills on livestock management, agricultural activities including composting technologies. The project will pilot an integrated farming project which will not only help to address the malnutrition issues on Beru Island but also help increase the capacity of members in activities related to agriculture, livestock management, financial management, etc. As per the Kiribati medical report, Beru has been listed as one of the highest in malnutrition cases in Kiribati Island. The community will work hard to ensure that the project will provide vegetables, protein (eggs) and root crops to the people of Beru and nearby outer islands once it has been scaled up.
The amount of annual rainfall on the Southern part of Kiribati is very low as opposed to islands situated in the North. The integrated sustainable farming project would not be successful without water and therefore part and parcel of the project will include the improvement of water supply to support the sustainable farming activities.
