Save drinking water and healthy environment in the face of climate change
Save drinking water and healthy environment in the face of climate change
Providing aid for solar distillation plants and household sanitation system will help enhancing and promote healthy living for the people of Kainaba. The main issue on the islet is brackish water since most wells become saltier and unsafe to use. With a small population about 70 households, people often have difficulties to access safe water especially the vulnerable group such as children and elders. This is one of the climate change impacts that affect not only the people of Kainaba but other Gilbert islands. Having the distillation plants in place will help people access safe drinking water and reduce disease caused by the consumption of brackish water. Poor sanitation is another issue in Kainaba as the majority use beaches and mangroves to defecate. Not many people in Kainaba prioritize building their sanitation system and therefore, providing them with toilet bowls and accompanied with awareness and educating them about the negative impacts of open defecation, will help in changing their behaviour.
